Subject: AK so far

Message: I'm very sorry that 40 and 30 have not worked better so far. We really have tried. July 5 attempts from Deadhorse (parking lot of camp) and July 6 attempts from Galbraith Lake campground at mile 275 on the Dalton. The long mast on 40 apparently does sort of work as I was picked up three times by KU7T between 0914z and 0946z on July 6. Not a single hit on 30 meters, and nothing on either band the previous morning. I was up from just after 1 a.m. local to about 2:30 a.m. local (0900Z to 1030Z) and couldn't take it any longer. It's 1 a.m. now and we just got back into Fairbanks after driving the last 250 miles of the Dalton Highway and having a troublesome flat tire. I will NOT be on this morning (July 7 UTC) but will plan to be tomorrow. Note we are now in FOURTH DISTRICT. I am happy to entertain suggestions as to times to try those bands. I had a quick contact with K0DEQ yesterday at 2255Z on 30. I heard W4SIG and W0GXQ (barely) this morning on 40 but they did not hear me. Things should get better now that we are further south. Those who have been up here know what it's like trying to get a signal over the Brooks Range. Fortunately the sight-seeing and the birding has been better than the propagation on 30 and 40 meters. I'll post some more tomorrow and will be happy to text or e-mail with individuals or respond here on the Forum now that I have e-mail. I had NO cell coverage after we left Deadhorse yesterday morning. 73, Jim N9JF
